Young People's Awards 2024


We are excited to take a look back on our 5th Young People's Awards! The awards is a celebration of the remarkable personal achievements of our young people. We came together to honour their resilience, growth, and dedication, as well as to reflect on the incredible journeys they have been on.


Throughout the night, we shared the stories behind the nominations, giving you a glimpse into the lives of our service users. Some of whom are still with us, while others have since moved on. Each story is unique: some have achieved a wide range of successes, while others have triumphed over a single significant challenge with our support. Regardless of where they are in their journeys, all of these young people deserve to be recognised for their courage and perseverance.


We were also proud to celebrate the invaluable contributions of our volunteers and student placements this year. Their hard work and commitment play a vital role in supporting the young people we serve, and tonight, we honour them too.


This year's event is particularly special as we celebrate our 5th anniversary. Over these past five years, we’ve been privileged to witness countless stories of growth and achievement. Tonight we celebrate not just those milestones but the spirit of the community we’ve built together.


Our awards have been held in a variety of locations around Bath However this year we hosted the event at Bath Spa University where we are a cultural partner. Bath Spa University's Students' Union President Jas Raymond-Barker hosted this year's show alongside Sam Plummer our Head of Operations and Practice.

Alternative Education Winners

April H

Nominated by Charlotte T

April quickly became a positive and well-liked member of Alt Ed. Despite her struggles with mental health, she built strong relationships with staff, and her confidence and resilience has notably improved over the past six months. She actively participated in sessions and trips, developing practical skills like budgeting and cooking. 


Recently, April enrolled in an Animal Care Level 3 course at Bath College, showcasing her determination to pursue her interests. Her journey exemplified significant personal growth, overcoming challenges and gaining independence. April's story highlights the positive impact of supportive environments in fostering youth development.


Bethanie Rosie-Jones

Bethanie's journey with the Education Support Service has been truly inspiring. Initially receiving home tutoring, she blossomed over the year, demonstrating remarkable personal growth. Achieving a grade 7 in English and passing Maths, Bethanie actively participated in feedback groups and interview panels, finding a sense of belonging at YCSW. Bethanie enjoyed multiple trips and activity days and is known for her fashionable outfits and positive energy. Her commitment led her from one session a week to enrolling in a full-time course at YCSW in September. Her self-confidence has grown tremendously, and she has embraced every opportunity that came her way. Bethanie's story is a celebration of resilience and empowerment.


Bryn Carmel-Papadopoulos

Upon joining the programme, Bryn embraced the opportunity for growth and became more confident in communicating their needs. Their excellent attendance and engagement led to remarkable personal development. Bryn attended D&D sessions in the busy mainstream college building, demonstrating increased resilience. Academically, Bryn thrived, achieving a high grade in GCSE Maths and progressing to A-level studies. Their journey and growth to becoming a mentor showcased exceptional personal growth. Bryn's ability to independently communicate exam anxieties with college staff and successfully sit two exams - four papers - highlighted their improved self-advocacy skills. As a leader in the games group, Bryn fostered positive peer relationships and helped build others' confidence. They became a role model for self-acceptance, encouraging fellow students to embrace their authentic selves.


Marcus Cross

Marcus, a member of the L4W Radstock team, has shown remarkable growth over the past 18 months. Initially hesitant to accept support, he has become a key figure in the programme, excelling academically and passing Level 2 English. Marcus's enthusiasm shone during the residential, where he fully engaged in activities and encouraged his peers. His commitment extended beyond the classroom, as he actively participated in fundraising events for YCSW. Marcus has developed impressive resilience, competence, and confidence, becoming a valuable team member and role model for others. His active involvement in various activities and his ability to inspire fellow students demonstrate his personal growth and leadership qualities. Marcus's achievements in both academic and extracurricular areas highlight his dedication and potential for future success.


Phage Lofstrom

Phage joined our education programme as a reserved student but quickly blossomed into a confident, independent young woman. She became a core member of many groups, serving as a mentor and positive role model for her peers. Throughout the programme, Phage developed crucial personal skills and completed valuable work experience in various careers. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Phage overcame numerous obstacles, significantly improving her communication skills in the process. She excelled in developing independent living skills, showcasing her creativity by making her own bike and trousers. Phage's determination was further evident in her pursuit of driving, as she successfully passed her theory test and began practical lessons. Her journey exemplifies the transformative power of education and personal growth, inspiring those around her with her progress and achievements.


Sapphire Love

Sapphire, a standout student in L4W Bath, demonstrated exceptional dedication and ability throughout the course. She excelled academically, achieving impressive results in Maths GCSE and English Level 2 skills. Sapphire's commitment extended beyond the classroom, as she volunteered extensively for YCSW, contributing to work experience programmes, community events, and interview panels. Her enthusiasm for learning was evident in her completion of 100 extra course hours and additional home preparation for hair and beauty sessions. Sapphire's hard work paid off when she secured a trainee position at a nursery upon completing the L4W programme. Described as a "legend" by her Key Worker, Sapphire's journey exemplifies how determination and engagement can lead to significant achievements.


Shantelle Olley-Dixon

Shantelle's journey on the L4W Bath programme has significantly influenced her personal development in various ways. Despite facing challenges as a young mother with financial and childcare difficulties, she remained focused on her studies and successfully passed English Functional Skills Level 2 last year. Living independently she has demonstrated her independence and responsibility. Shantelle has also opened up to trusted individuals, showing progress in her ability to communicate her needs and seek support. Shantelle is taking proactive steps to understand herself better. Initially hesitant about pursuing her hair and beauty goals, she overcame her doubts and is now studying a full time Hair and Beauty course at Bath College. Shantelle's journey reflects significant strength and resilience as she navigates the challenges of being a young mother while pursuing her education and future goals.

Targeted Support Winners

Abigail Wyatt

Abi was referred to us in 2020 during the lockdown when she was facing a challenging time. Soon after we began working with her, Abi opened up about a traumatic experience. Despite moments where she felt like giving up, she showed incredible perseverance and discovered an inner strength to keep going. Over time, Abi has engaged with our entire range of services—from Targeted 1:1 Support and Youth Work to Wellbeing and Employability programmes.


In her spare time, Abi has become one of our young trustees and has even fundraised for us through car boot sales. Her journey has been truly inspiring, and after volunteering at our Open-Access Sessions, she has now secured a permanent role as an Assistant Youth Support Worker. 


Well done, Abi, for tapping into your resilience and never giving up!


Alex Rivers

Alex worked 1:1 with our Targeted Support service, arriving to each session with an open mind and 100% commitment. They always listened carefully and responded thoughtfully and were keen to explore their thoughts and feelings. Their willingness to delve deep, push themselves out of their comfort zone and really challenge themselves led to gradual but significant changes. 


Alex took part in YCSW’s Link Up group run by Jane. They were fundamental in progressing this group and in welcoming new starters. Alex was keen to mentor young people who had been out of mainstream education and to share their journey by way of inspiration. This is to be highly commended and we supported them in this idea. 


We are all incredibly proud of them, they are a shining example of how, with the right support and with perseverance, determination, and courage, you really can grow. Thank you for being such an amazing person to work with!


Lilly Shell

Lilly was referred to YCSW from school. There were issues identified at home, as well as behaviour in school. Lilly has specific learning and health needs and felt more support was needed in school. A professionals meeting was held, where Lilly was able to use her voice and felt heard, where school then actioned educational support. Lilly is also an important member of Open Access Youth Provision and completed her work experience placement with excellence this summer! Well done Lilly, you are amazing!


Oscar L'esteve

Referred by his youth club, he was struggling and feeling stuck. "I was bored and found it hard with no routine," he said. Since being referred, his confidence has grown significantly. He completed a 12-week course with the Prince’s Trust and worked within construction and earned a CIC construction qualification. Over time, his self-esteem has also improved. During the summer, he began coaching youth club football and has returned to college this year. He has learned strategies for managing overwhelming feelings and staying focused by reducing distractions. This year, he has shown resilience and dedication, working hard to secure a place at his chosen college and maintaining positive aspirations for the future. The Percy Centre noted that he has become much calmer, with his mental health improving. They added, "His mind has opened to new opportunities, and his general outlook on life has improved. He’s someone who benefits greatly from one-on-one sessions."


Rebecca Rumney-Fawcett

Becca was referred to me around a year ago, as she had a lot going on for her. She has been a young carer for her mum from a very young age, and had some more recent incidents of self-harm. Becca was struggling in her final year at school and had applied for an autism diagnosis as she felt that she had traits that she was masking at school. When she got her diagnosis, Becca initially found this difficult to cope with. We did some research together and I gave her more information to help her understand the diagnosis. We have been working on raising self-esteem and have created resources for a wellbeing box amongst other things. Becca has shown great resilience and perseverance in this time, and is now in her final year of 6th form. Although she still has her struggles, I have watched her grow and become more confident and comfortable in herself. She has learned to change the narrative from what she can’t do, to what she can achieve!


Ruby Milsom

I would describe Ruby as kind and compassionate. Ruby used the time effectively to reflect on life events and spent the time to stop and to understand herself more. Ruby learnt how to navigate new changes both in and outside of school, whilst going through some significant transition periods. Ruby completed several activities that combined personal wellbeing alongside exploring post-16 options. I always think that the biggest thing you can do, is to show up for yourself and she did that with flying colours. Her love for her dog and horses, shared with her passion to compete in dressage, demonstrates her hard work ethic and dedication. Ruby proudly passed her GCSE’s and obtained her provisional licence and is now embracing a new chapter at college. Ruby can be her biggest critic and would admit herself that she is too hard on herself. I know she sometimes finds what I say cringey ha ha, but I hope what she can take away from the support the most is how to grow in self-love and self-care and to always be her biggest cheerleader and I wish all the best for her next adventures.


Ruby Roberts

When Ruby was referred to YCSW she was experiencing significant mental health problems and struggling with some family relationships. However, after making some changes in her life, Ruby has grown in confidence, and is thriving, she is now head of house at school and has supported the engagement team by helping to interview for a new member of staff.

Youth Work Winners

Charlie Fry

Charlie has attended youth sessions at Southside Youth Hub for about 5 years. As he has got older he has played an active part in the sessions including helping staff run sessions, making decisions and attending meetings to help with funding initiatives to improve sessions at Southside.


Charlie for many years has been a young carer for his father who has been ill since Charlie was 4 years old - who at this moment in time is in very poor health. At times this has meant Charlie has been affected in his personal life and his education. Charlie, although having a tough year has managed to pass exams, secure a college place to continue his studying to become a future paramedic.


Corey Andrews

When Corey first started singing sessions, he was really nervous and always preferred to sing along to songs with the original artist. The concept of performing was a huge challenge and Corey didn’t have the self-confidence to match his fantastic voice. As performance opportunities came up on the project, Corey never felt ready to take part, despite his continued motivation and enthusiasm in sessions. When we reached the final project showcase at Komedia, I really hoped Corey would share his hard work with everyone, but again it just felt too overwhelming. Instead, Corey and his keyworker filmed a version of his performance song, to be played via video on the night. It came to the gig and right before his performance slot, Corey told me he was going to go for it!! He overcame all his nerves and apprehension, got up on the stage at Komedia and blew everyone away with his voice. Corey’s journey over the last year demonstrates such resilience, growth and determination. He should be very proud.


Jacob Jackson-Whittoch

Jacob has been great at introducing YCSW on detached to lots of his friends in the City Centre and always speaking positively about both YCSW and Project 28.


Jacob also is a great friend who is trustworthy, loyal and honest and will do his utmost to help his friends when they are in need or require support. For example, when one of his friends was getting involved in drugs over the summer and needed help, he shared his concerns with Dave and Millie who were able to advise in terms of getting help and support with Project 28. This has also led to a more open relationship with this group of young people.


Libby Morgan

Always a positive person to have in the centre, Libby gets involved in the different activities. She contributes to the programme, and encourages her peers to get involved, happy to step in and help with clearing up at the end of sessions. Brilliant positive relationships with the team and always arrives and greets staff and visitors with a smile and a friendly demeanour.


We have had a lot of challenging behaviour at the centre over the past few months, Libby has chosen to move away from being involved in the negative behaviours. Libby has instead started to get involved and take advantage of the space as well as working to build relationships with their Youth Work team. 


Martha Bett Wanford

When Martha shows up she gives it her all and always spends time with the young people whether that is during sports activities or crafting, the young people really enjoy spending time with her. She is friendly and pro-active, an asset to the team! She’s developed on all levels, and now has experience within sessions, building relationships with young people, and understanding the structure of youth work. Her personal development would be building her knowledge of youth work, relationships with young people and building her confidence. We have told her she would make a wonderful youth worker, but she’s currently at sixth form and isn’t sure what she would like to do in the future as of yet.


Pavel Szewczyk

We have seen a positive change in behaviours presented at the youth centre from Pavel. He has moved away from being involved with his peers who are presenting us with lots of challenging behaviour, some of which he would have been involved with in the past. He has started to get more involved around ideas for the programme and joining in with activities at the centre. Relationships are positive with the Youth Work team.


Raven Blake

Raven has worked hard on her musicianship, and overcome so much to get back into her drumming after years of not playing. Raven demonstrated consistent motivation and was always eager to learn. Raven’s biggest challenge this year was completing her college music course while significantly under-supported by tutors. Around Easter, Raven wanted to drop the course due to the frustration and being let down by her college. Together in 1-1 sessions, we built a plan for Raven to see the course to the end, and complete her final major project. Raven showed up week after week, challenged herself, smashed performances and ended up completing all her coursework. Raven achieved a merit at college alongside a busy work schedule. I am in awe of her effort and optimism to overcome these tricky circumstances. In addition, I encouraged Raven to sign up for the wonderful opportunity to attend Glastonbury with YCSW. She was very unsure and had many valid reasons for not wanting to go. After some further encouragement and information from Jayne, Raven threw herself into the trip and had an absolute blast! Well done Raven for diving into the volunteering and not letting apprehension hold you back from fun!

Volunteer Award

Cody Veale

Cody is one of our senior members at Westfield Youth Club (the club is year 7-9, but a few older young people attend as senior members). He arrives early for sessions, helping to set up, and stays to help clear up after the session. Cody also plans and runs activities for sessions, paying attention to the curriculum to select topics. Cody also completed a week of work experience with Youth Connect in the summer and hopes to become a youth worker in the future. Cody needs little direction as he is self-motivated and good at identifying what needs to be done to support the smooth running of the club. Cody is a calming presence for the club and his reliable support is a great benefit.


Daisy Church and Roxy Johnston

Roxy and Daisy, very quickly, developed supporting relationships with all of the young people whilst attending Glastonbury. They organised the group and staff at some points, to make sure that everyone could see the music and experience other areas, (circus and theatre) that they wanted to. They always accompanied the young people.


They regularly checked in with the young people and staff to make sure everyone was ok and made sure the young people had what they needed. The feedback from the Oxfam supervisors was fabulous. They gave 100% in their stewarding. 


Roxy and Daisy had not been to Glastonbury before. They both developed in confidence, became natural leader’s and got organised very quickly without prompting. They gave everything they both had to make sure that the experience was positive and safe for all.


They regularly checked in with the staff and were an integral and valued part of all decision making during the festival. When the lead worker became ill, Roxy and Daisy both stepped up to make sure that the young people felt safe and supported.

Taking young people to Glastonbury is a very tricky thing to do and requires 100% attention to detail along with an understanding of how to facilitate this for a group of young people.


They both smashed it. If Roxy and Daisy hadn’t had been as amazing as they were, the trip would have had to be cancelled and everyone taken home as we were a worker down towards the end of the week.

Placement Award

Leah Kenny-Edgington

Leah's dedication and outstanding contributions during her two-year placement with Youth Connect South West are the reason she has been awarded the prestigious Placement Award. Throughout her time with us, while completing her events degree at Bath Spa University, Leah consistently demonstrated her commitment to making a real impact. She led the organisation of a highly successful fun day at Southside Youth Hub, attracting hundreds of attendees, and took charge of delivering two years' worth of memorable Christmas and Easter events. Her passion, hard work, and the lasting difference she made in the community have truly earned her this well-deserved recognition.
